Pondicherry – The Promenade Beach
The Promenade beach of Pondicherry is perhaps the most beautiful place in the city to relax and sit. I have visited many beaches but the one here has captivated me like no other. I have written a post about the sunset in Kanyakumari in my blog before. While I can say the sunrise and sunset in Kanyakumari is majestic, the sunrise in Pondicherry is equally magnificent, refreshing and relaxing. The sight of the sun rising from the horizon is so mesmerizing that it could make your entire day beautiful.
I first saw the polished and clean Pondicherry beach in the afternoon of the day I arrived. The beach had a rocky shore laid out with big boulders with a nice pavement, decorated with lampposts and trees. The boulders were big and flat. The waters touched occasionally touched them with gentle waves splashing water once in a while. Unlike many other beaches of India, where you will feel the saltiness and stickiness of the air in your body, Pondicherry beach is completely different from the rest. Anyone can comfortably sit there for hours and enjoy the fresh air brushing their hair and ease their body.
The real beauty of Pondicherry was in the sunrise. The next day I got up at five at morning and went to the sea which was just half a mile from the ashram where I was staying. Even at 5 in the morning, I was surprised to see the beach was full of people jogging, walking and doing exercise. Some people were sleeping in the big boulders near the sea in such a way that the droplets of waters were touching their bodies. I also chose a flat rock where I sat comfortably, waiting for the sun to rise. Dim lights of the fishing boats were coming from the sea. The sky was slowly coming to life, darkness was slowly dissipating by the advent of the sun. The morning breeze from the sea was life giving. I don’t remember feeling so relaxing and lively anywhere. That moment was priceless.
Slowly the faint orange disc of the sun became visible from the depth of the sea. I heard someone clap as the growing anticipation had finally to an end. The sight of sunrise, the clouds turning golden yellow from orange, the golden waters sparkling with the sun acknowledging its arrival, all reminded me of Kanyakumari. However, there was a slight difference. In Pondicherry everyone was offered a free seat to watch the amazing movie of sunrise in a lively painted canvas of the sky. The result was visually stunning and unforgettable.
Everyone watching that breathtaking view took with him a lifelong memory which he can cheer for in days to come. I also had captured my personal memory by the help of my camera. Although the real view is far more enticing and enthralling, watching the images surely takes me to that precious moment.
I am sharing some of the pictures with you guys in the hope of generating a strong interest within you to go to Pondicherry and enjoy its hospitality like I did.
