Shiva, the god of destruction, the king of yogis.
The god who always mediates
For the welfare of every being in the universe
I bow and offer my salutations before you.
Shiva, the god of love and compassion
Unattached, unaware and yet knows all
Smeared in holy ash
With no inhibitions and greed for physical attributes
With no worldly desires and wishes.
Yet he meditates peacefully
Granting boons to his devotees
Never judging between a god or demon, good or evil
Such is his compassion, such is his innocence.
He is the epitome of detachment
And yet his tranquility and purpose is great.
The welfare of the world is always in his mind.
Living in an ice-capped mountain, full of difficulties
He accepts this ordeal quietly.
He also resides in burial grounds
Embrace the crying souls which are heaven bound.
Flames emanate from his third eye
It destroys the evil propensities of the human mind
His anger is only symbolic
As there can be no creation without destruction.
He dances magnificently, he is rightly called the king of dance
By his rhythmic, vibrant and life giving tandava dance
He shows the world the significance of creation.
Oh lord Shiva, I pray to you on this day
To show me the love hidden in my heart
To give me a new ray of hope and vision.
My soul is covered in the ashes of past
Burn me in your divine flame
So that I can come out pure and sacred…
So that I can differentiate between what is right and easy…
So that I can walk on this long journey of life
With devotion and faith,
Until my soul will merge with you
And we will unite and be one
For ever and ever.
